This week, the Desmond Elliott Prize was awarded. Its aim is to reward “the best debut novel written in English and published in the UK. The winning novel can be from any genre of fiction and must exhibit depth and breadth with a compelling narrative”. The winner of this year’s prize, The Marlowe Papers by Ros Barber, does not only bear these qualities but is also written in verse, which makes for an original and exciting reading experience.
It’s that time of the year when the temperature rises… Except for thrillers, which are best served chilling. This week, we notably recommend Accidents Happen by Scottish author Louise Millar, and The Silent Wife, which is A.S.A. Harrison’s debut novel.
In the chick-lit category, the latest releases come from no other than bestselling authors Elin Hilderbrand and Mary Alice Monroe. If you’re looking for a light-hearted novel by the sea, this is right up your alley. For more titles in this genre, you can browse our category Contemporary Women.
A few months ago, Scottish author Iain Banks announced that he had been diagnosed with terminal gall bladder cancer. His recent death saddened a wide part of the literary world, and his works had a huge impact on many contemporary authors. This week, his latest and last novel was released by the publisher Redhook.
Focusing on a teenage protagonist, The Quarry also deals with themes of aging and death and may well be Banks’ most personal work.
Fantasy enthusiasts were quite spoiled this week, with the releases of the sixth book of the supernatural fantasy series The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne, the second book of the urban fantasy series Saturn’s Daughter by Jamie Quaid, and the third and last book of the Spiritwalker Trilogy by Kate Elliott.
