Aldiko

What is Aldiko?

Aldiko is an ebook reading application that runs on any Android phone and which enables you to easily download and read thousands of books right on your smartphone.

We’re glad to announce that this new EPUB reading system, capable of downloading content directly from Feedbooks is now available. We’ve worked with our friends at Aldiko to make this experience as seamless as possible: it is actually based on the same Atom catalog format that we’re using for Stanza. I’m glad that we finally have a second reading system commited to implement the future OPDS standard, and Aldiko actually implements some of the recommendations that we recently submitted.

Once again, Feedbooks is the first platform available on a new reading system. We’ve been very successful with Stanza (Neelan recently announced that 8 million EPUB files have been distributed on Stanza. 75% of these files came from Feedbooks) and hope to have a similar success with any new reading system on the market. The Android platform is very attractive and with 18 new Android-based devices in 2009, it should get some significant share of the smartphone market.

FBReaderJ

With the upcoming release of the HTC Magic (also known as the G2), as well as several LG, Samsung & Motorola phones later in 2009, Android is quickly gaining momentum.

While the Android marketplace isn’t exactly full of e-books app yet, you can already read books from Feedbooks on your Android-based phone using either FBReaderJ or Word Player.

FBReaderJ is the Java port of FBReader, a famous cross-platform reading software. While FBReaderJ isn’t available yet on the Android Marketplace (they’ll release the next version on the Marketplace though), you can already install it using an Android package. Once installed on Android, FBReaderJ will download and open .epub files accessed through the browser. Just browse on our mobile website at http://feedbooks.mobi and click on the ePub link.

Word Player is another alternative on Android. It is already available on the Android Marketplace and will automatically launch our mobile website once you open it. Click on any of our ePub link to download an e-book and you’ll be able to read it in Word Player.

Expect a lot more e-book readers in the future on the Android Marketplace, including the 3 major players on the iPhone AppStore: Stanza, Kindle and eReader.
